4 Fangs

Fangs is a Firefox (compatible with all Gecko-based browsers) add-on that “creates a textual representation of a web page similar to how the page would be read by a modern screen reader” (quoted from the add-on creator). The home page of this add-on is http://www.standards-schmandards.com/projects/fangs/.

Follow the instructions to install the add-on. You’ll need to restart Firefox for the add-on to become effective.

Fangs adds its own menu item labeled “Fangs” under the “Tools” menu. To read the text-only rendering of a web page, just go to the “Tools” menu, and click “Fangs”. A new browser window pops up and displays the content of the current HTML document in plain text format.

Note that Fangs presents three tabs. The first tab is “Screen reader output”, which renders the text version of how a screen reader reads the HTML document. The second tab, “Headings list”, is a table of contents of the document using the structure of headers (HTML elements like <h1>, <h2> and etc.). The last tab is “Links list”, which lists all the links in an HTML document in the same order as they appear.

Fangs is small, fast and simplistic. It does not change the normal behavior of Firefox, either. This means Fangs can be installed in most Profiles without interfering with normal browsing. On the other hand, the accessible rendering of Fangs is somewhat limited compare to other products.
