DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) is considered an “application layer” protocol in the TCP/IP model. It is used to facilitate the automation of setting up the configuration of a NIC (network address, netmask, host address, broadcast address and default gateway). DHCP also sets up the DNS server of a NIC.
