CISS 315: Ethical Hacking

Hours: 48 hours lecture, 28 hours laboratory
Description: This course explores ways in which security for a stand-alone PC and a network-connected PC can be compromised. It introduces basic security concepts, principles and "best practices." It also explores ways in which the security of a PC can be checked and evaluated. Principles of ethical hacking are discussed. Internal and external security threats are discussed, including viruses, worms, Trojans, scripts, and other malicious e-mail content. Network vulnerabilities, common exploits, and basic countermeasures are also covered.

Section 3: Learning Outcomes and Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • identify software and hardware configuration issues that may leave a PC vulnerable to unauthorized access.
  • implement software configuration settings that will assist in protecting a PC.
  • configure and implement data security methods including encryption.
  • install network security devices and software to prevent intrusions.
