In case your NIC is not supported, you should consider switching to a supported NIC. There are many NICs already supported by Linux, and most are inexpensive. Particularly, USB NICs are convenient even for notebook computers.

Sometimes, a driver module is available but it is distributed separately. In this case, you can use module-assistant to compile the device driver. Install module-assistant first, then use the command m-a as root.
