Before Ext3 was commonly used, ReiserFS was a likely candidate to become the default/standard file system of Linux distributions. This is because it incorporated journaling and online resizing (before Ext3).
However, the main author of ReiserFS has been convicted of second degree murder, and all further development has been halted.
