Many believe that malware (malicious software) is only for Windows. That is far from the truth. Although Linux computers make up a small percentage of computers, it is almost an ideal platform to experiment with malware due to the open source nature. Furthermore, because many servers run Linux, hackers may find hacking Linux more cost effective if the intent is to steal data from a server.
In fact, the concept of a rootkit (or root kit) was first experimented on Unix-like operating systems before it was applied to Windows.
In other words, just because most people believe that Linux more secure doesn’t make Linux more secure. Computer security requires the constant watchful supervision of an administrator, regardless of the operating system.
