From a client’s perspective, the most important security concern is how the credential is transmitted to the server. Unfortunately, this is not something that a SMB client has control over.

Another security concern is how the mount point is configured. This is not SMB specific, however. If a mount point is not configured correctly, it is possible for unintended user on the workstation to gain access to a remote file system.

Use the following command to learn more about the options when mounting SMB as a file system:

The following is a short list of items to consider:

• uid=
  This option specifies the user owner of the files and folders under the mount point.
• gid=
  This option specifies the group owner of the files and folders under the mount point. If not specified, the uid doubles as the gid.
• file_mode
  This is a “mask” that is applied to the permission of all files (excluding directories) under the mount point.
