The most widely used operating system (OS) as of 2008 is Microsoft Windows XP. However, there are many other operating systems. For example, Apple Macintosh computers run MacOS X. Next to these two proprietary OSes, Linux is an open source (free) OS that is gaining popularity. Another open source operating system is FreeBSD, although its popularity is less than that of Linux.
