Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) is the protocol for transmitting a message from a client to a server, and also for relaying messages among servers. In our example, John’s computer transmits the message to Comcast’s email server using SMTP, then Comcast’s email server relays the message to Surewest’s email server using the same protocol.
