The next screen asks whether you want to erase the entire physical
hard disk, or manually edit the partition table. Unless you already
have partitions that you want to save, it is best to
use the first option and erase the physical disk. Press ENTER to
continue.
Next, you'll be presented three options to create the necessary
partitions. Let's explore those options:
- ``All files in one partition.'' This option creates only one
main partition to mount the root of the file system. It is
simple and easy to set up. However, if you have multiple physical
hard disks, you may want to explore other options.
- ``Desktop machine.'' This option gives you several options.
You can set up a software RAID (redundant array of inexpensive
drives) if you have multiple hard disks. You can use LVM (logical
volume manager) for flexibility. You can also resize the suggested
partition sizes.
- ``Multiuser workstation.'' This option gives you even more
options. Instead of having just a few partitions for the root
and ``home'' directories, this option also allocates for
many other main directories. If you like to tune computers,
this is the option to pick.
For now, we'll use the first option for simplicity. Select that option,
then press the ENTER key. The installer then asks you to confirm
the partitioning and write changes to disk. Press ENTER to confirm.
The following screen asks you to confirm (again). Make sure you select
``Yes'' before pressing the ENTER key. This starts the partitioning and
also partiion formatting. Any existing data on the disk will be
lost after this step!
