NOTE FROM EMMA

Hello, I'm Emma and I have really been enjoying making websites so far! I very much look forward to learning more and how to make my sites look nice and well functional.

I wasn't sure what to add to my column so I thought it would be fun to make one for each species of hyena since there are four columns and four different hyena species! I can't exactly recall if there was ever one particular instance or event that started it, but I have had a HUGE obsession for hyenas for years now and I love to talk about them!

SPOTTED HYENA

Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are the most well known type of hyena and are unfortunately largely mischaracterized by media (cough cough THE LION KING cough cough ). They are often thought of as thieving scavengers who only eat rotten meat while in reality they are great opportunistic hunters and only scavenge around 90% of their meals!

SPOTTED HYENA

The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) are the second most well known hyena. Striped hyenas are actually easily tameable and have been known to become very affectionate and as amenable as well-trained dogs when properly trained. When raised in captivity, they can also form strong bonds with other dogs as well.

BROWN HYENA

The brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea) is currently the rarest species of hyena with estimated only between 4,000 and 10,000 individuals in the wild. Brown hyenas actually live in packs that are very similar to wolfs and function very in similar fassion.

AARDWOLF

Aardwolfs (Proteles cristatus) are the smallest and the only insectivorous spices of hyena. It primarily eats termites and has a specialised tongue that is tough enough to withstand the nasty bite of a termite. Aardwolf's generic name translates to, "complete in front", referencing to their paws as they have five toes on their front paws and four toes on their hind paws.
