CISS 325: Network Security and Firewalls

Prerequisite: CISS 310 (Network Security Fundamentals) with a grade of "C" or better
Hours: 45 hours lecture, 27 hours laboratory
Description: This course covers network and Internet security and deployment of industry standard countermeasures, including configuring Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. Topics include the evaluation, implementation, and management of secure remote-access technologies. Also covered is the configuration of network firewalls, and allowing access to key services while maintaining security. This course provides preparation for the Check Point Security's "Check Point Certified Security Administrator" (CCSA) certification exam. This course is not open to students who have completed CISS 320 and CISS 330 at any other campus within the Los Rios District.

Section 3: Learning Outcomes and Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • construct and demonstrate virtual private networks (VPN)
  • define and apply other forms of secure remote access
  • differentiate the different types of intrusion detection systems (IDS)
  • evaluate and apply methods to protect a network from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks
  • demonstrate the installation and configuration of a firewall
  • construct a firewall for secure remote access and explain the methodology used
  • define and describe the use of firewalls in network security
  • demonstrate a firewall design for internal as well as external network security
  • assess common security risks and apply industry standard countermeasures to protect the network
