Why do you want to use a secure connection, instead of a non-secure connection? The full answer requires some understanding of networking protocols. However, the short answer simply states that you can lose your password and username to someone if you don't!

Of course, there is not much sensitive information on Moodle. However, knowing that some of us use the same password for multiple accounts, releasing any password is not a good idea.
