Velocity is the change of displacement over time. The symbol of velocity is $v = \frac{{\rm d}D}{{\rm d}t}$ . Because displacement is measured in meters (m), and time is measured in seconds (s). Consequently, velocity is measured in $\rm {ms^{-1}}$ .
