The major disadvantage of emulation is performance. Despite what advertisements claim, an emulator can only achieve a fraction of the performance of native hardware.

Of course, this is a problem if you plan to run programs that are computational intense (like a ray tracer, or transcoder). However, if you are only interested in the configuration of a server, or write C programs, then performance should not be a main issue.
