The best and shortest introduction to Debian can be found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian. In short, it is one of the few distributions maintained
by non-commercial and non-profit organizations. Besides the
``true to free software'' philosophy, Debian is also attractive due to
its packaging system as well as ease of maintenance. Last, but not least,
Debian comes with three distributions for people with different needs.
How does Debian compare to Red Hat (Fedora)? Here is an objective review
that claims to be biased: http://chris.quietlife.net/?p=152. If you need more convincing,
here is another rather technical comparison (that favors Debian):
http://debian-br.sourceforge.net/txt/debian_vs_redhat.html.
It is true, however, that Red Hat
distributions are easier to install than Debian.
